The Salem County Department of Health & Human Services is dedicated to improving the health of our community. It is a goal to increase availability of physical activity as well as to decrease the amount of our residents with an inactive lifestyle. Physical activity is one of the best things a person can do to decrease their risk of chronic conditions and improve pre-existing ones. It increases circulation, builds muscle, and improves breathing. It releases feel good hormones and helps you rest better. It can also help relieve stress! No excuse not to Move Yourself!

Walk Indoors: Don’t have time to leave your office or want to bring some physical activity to a group that you work with or serve? Then “Walk Indoors” is the perfect option! Our health educators will bring our indoor walking DVD that was created by the New Jersey SNAP-Ed Program to bring physical activity to everyone! This DVD can be used in a community center, an office building or even at home! Participants can even become leaders of the DVD themselves! A copy of the DVD will be given to the organization so they can use it any time! For a preview of the DVD, click here!
Walk N’ Talks: Don’t like walking alone? Then this program is for you! We meet at various walking sites throughout the county and walk together. During the walk, the Salem County Health Department’s health educator will lead a discussion on various health topics. Participants have a chance to ask questions and learn more while getting exercise in a group setting. Participants can plan to meet up with other walkers and begin to walk separately or just follow the program around the county and find some new walking trails! For our summer schedule, click here!
Walk Across New Jersey: This program was made for groups that want to challenge each other to move more! A little competition can be the edge that an individual needs to start incorporating more physical activity into their day! Walk Across New Jersey was adapted from a few other walking challenges and tracks a groups miles they walk throughout the day using pedometers or StartWalkingNow.org. The Salem County Health Department will provide a group with a large map of New Jersey with various point that the group “walks” to and challenge each other to get from one end of the state to the other!
